What a historic day in cycling! Philippe Gilbert has followed David Rebellin as only the second cyclist to win all three of the Ardennes classics in the same season. Contested over the last week were Amstel Gold last Sunday, Fleche Wallonne on Wednesday, and Liege-Bastogne today. Well ok so Amstel Gold hasn’t been around all that long. Since ’66. Only two riders even doubled the Fleche and Liege before. Fredi Kubler doing it twice in ’51 and ’52, and Stan Ockers in ’55. Compare this to the 11 men that have doubled Flanders and Roubaix. This is a monumental cycling accomplishment that grants chest pounding like gorillas in the jungle of professional bike racing.
