Bearings Explained

There are some different kinds of bearings used in hubs out there. Hopefully this will help you to understand them.

Cartridge bearings are the most popular bearings in the hubs I build with. They are a sealed unit easily replaced, sometimes serviceable, not adjustable. Available with ceramic or steel ball bearings inside.

Loose balls are a Shimano favorite. They sit directly in the hub’s race with grease and are adjustable by an external cone and locknut.

Retainer bearings are loose balls held together by a handy ring. They also sit directly in the hub’s race with grease and are adjustable by an external cone and locknut.
